Title: What's Done in the Dark
Rating: Hard PG-13.
Words: 3,501
Spoilers: None really, completely AU.
Warnings: Violence, language, child abuse, reasonably minor gore, briefly hinted-at sexual abuse, psychological issues, general misery, very very terrible father!John, psychotic!Sam, broken!lost!Dean. Not a happy story.
Summary: John Winchester's sons are on a mission from God. This is set in some indeterminable time after John's death, but if the cops are onto the Winchesters Dean doesn't know it. Written for the eternally fabulous prufrock_26, who wanted PTSD!murdering!John, psychotic murder!Sam, and a Dean who still thought that his family killed demons. This could also theoretically be a prequel to part two of "Variations on a Theme."
Neurotic author's notes: Title and cut text both from Johnny Cash's "God's Gonna Cut You Down." I wrote the bulk of this on the train and I'm not 100% pleased with this fic, as I wanted Dean's mental process to be a little more disjointed and Sam's manipulation a little clearer, but whatever, I got good news from the doctor today (this! is! so! rare! I'm! over! the! fucking! moon!!) and I wanted to post fic. Bruce, my love, I hope you like it. :)

Go tell that long tongue liar, go and tell that midnight rider, tell the rambler, the gambler, the back biter, tell 'em that God's gonna cut 'em down...

Title: QUIET IN MY TOWN
Author: [livejournal.com profile] cocoplumb
Rating: PG-13
Genre: SPN. hurt/comfort. AU.
Word Count: 4500+
Summary: It wasn’t Dean Winchester’s destiny to end up owning a tiny barbers shop on the outskirts of a tiny town in Minnesota.
Warnings/Notes: Another story by me involving haircutting. I have a serious problem, I know. The boys aren’t biologically related, Dean used to be a hunter, now he’s a barber with complete amnesia and a bad shoulder. Sam is a –sometimes- abused foster kid and Dean’s new customer who keeps on coming back for some reason. ALSO- completely un-beta'd. I'll fix it tomorrow, I promise.

Hello everybody! Let me introduce myself as your monthly reccer for February. And since procrastionation once again won over, well, common sense, I am glad to welcome you all to my rec post, here at the very end of the month. (In my defense, that always comes much faster than I expect it to in February.)

I pondered over a common theme for today's recs, and then decided to just do one that is completely random and has no theme whatsoever. And guess what, the common theme found itself! All these recs are either Dean/Cas, or very heavy on their friendship. (If you've met me, you can't be surprised in the least.)

So let's move onto the Dean/Cas February post! ;)

Title: Who If I Cried Out Would Hear Me

Word-count: 6,600 words
Spoilers: Vague Season 6
Warnings: Violence, some language, serious smiting
Summary: Dean goes missing on a hunt; Castiel can hear him but can't find him, and longer the situation drags on the unhappier Cas gets. An angry angel of the Lord is not someone to be messed with.

Reccer’s comments: Written for my prompt! ♥

Characters: Dean, Sam

Rating: R
Word-count: 11,600

Title: Until the Flames Go Out
Masterpost: link
Word Count: ~8500
Rating: PG-13
Characters: John, Dean, Sam
Genre: Gen., pre-series
Summary: Dean can't stay afraid of the flames, even if he'd probably be safer that way. Even if staring at the fire burns away a little part of him in the end. A story told in scenes from 1992-2006.
[identity profile] sparrow-lately.livejournal.com
Title: Become As Little Children (or more scenes from an alternate universe wherein Sam stole the Winchester boys in 1987)
Rating: PG-13
Words: 4,335
Spoilers: Vague, but for all aired episodes.
Warnings: Language, briefly mentioned child abuse, briefly mentioned neglect.
Summary: More from the world of "Reverse Engineering" if Sam had stayed. Previously played with this verse in "The Competitive Exclusion Principle States." So I guess it's a verse now?
Neurotic author's notes:
Well, in an effort to edit one little thing I managed to delete this entry. Go, Sparrow. Here it is again. :P
Merry Christmas, Christmas-celebrators! This is my gift to you. These
are the scenes I wrote to make myself happy during finals week, and now
I've only just had time to post them (I got home Friday night, and this
is the first moment I've actually had to myself!). As with before,
please ignore any timey-wimey implications of this--Sam changed history
and the Winchesters as they existed before that are gone, I'm thinking.
That's my story and I'm stickin' to it.
Also: The title is
from the Bible, from Matthew 18:3: "Verily I say unto you, Except ye be
converted, and become as little children, ye shall not enter into the
kingdom of heaven." The cut text is from Seneca (Hercules Furens).

Those things which were hard to bear, are sweet to remember.

Title: Dean's 12th Birthday
Author: KC246
Summary: Even though Dean didn't have high expectations for his birthday, he never thought he would spend it looking after a sick father, soothing a frightened little brother and nursing a black eye.
Rating: PG-13

Dean's 12th Birthday

TITLE: The Red Head
AUTHOUR: [livejournal.com profile] jennytork

GENRE: Gen, Wee!Chesters, H/C
SUMMARY: "Why's D's hair all red?"
NOTES: Written for my [livejournal.com profile] hc_bingo square: "unconsciousness"

The Red Head
[identity profile] sparrow-lately.livejournal.com
Title: The Competitive Exclusion Principle States (or scenes from an alternate universe wherein Sam stole the Winchester boys in 1987)
Rating: PG-13
Words: 5,446
Spoilers: Vague, but for all aired episodes.
Warnings: Language, briefly mentioned child abuse, briefly mentioned neglect.
Summary: Basically picked up where "Reverse Engineering" left off, but Cas never comes for Sam.
Neurotic author's notes: This isn't really fic so much as scenes I wrote to make myself happy during finals week that became something akin to a fic. Please ignore all the timey-wimey issues and implications regarding Sam and Sammy coexisting, 2012!Dean, etc., etc. This is sort of just mindless self-indulgence (hence the slight woobiefication of Dean, for which I apologize on bended knee).
Also: The competetive exclusion principle states that two species competing for the same resources cannot coexist if other ecological factors are constant. I'm a nerdy, nerdy nerd. Cut text is from Mitch Albom. (God, remember The Five People You Meet in Heaven? Somebody should do a Supernatural/Five People You Meet in Heaven crossover of some kind.)

“All parents damage their children. It cannot be helped. Youth, like pristine glass, absorbs the prints of its handlers. Some parents smudge, others crack, a few shatter childhoods completely into jagged little pieces, beyond repair.”

Author: [personal profile] lacerta
Characters: Dean, John
Genre/pairing: gen

Warnings: child abuse
Summary: And Abraham stretched forth his hand, and took the knife to slay his son.

Title: God Save the Human Cannon Ball
Author: downjune
Characters/Pairings: Sam'n'Dean (with some vague Sam/Dean), Claire Novak, Jody Mills, Castiel. Also, brief Sam/Jody.
Rating: R for violence
Word Count: 19,250
Warnings: Case-related incident of homophobic violence
Summary: In nearly every major religion, and in all the lore he can find on the subject of Purgatory, the living can influence the fortunes of the dead through prayers and offerings. And Sam's sure Dean isn't even dead, so, piece of cake. All he has to do is make the right offering. It only takes seven months -- and 29 years.

A post-Season 7 AU, and a story of past and present heroism.

Notes: Here's my minibang from over at samdean_otp ! I hope everyone's been checking out the goodies posting there! Massive thank yous go to harrigan for whipping this beast into shape and for being appropriately ruthless in her beta reading. Sam is a better Sam because of her careful eye. Also, hugs and squeezes to killabeez for being a much-needed third set of eyes when all perspective had been lost. Any remaining errors are entirely my own.

As for music, here's a link to the songs that inspired the story. There'll probably be a download available in the future, but for now enjoy Sam's songs for Dean. The title of this story is taken from "Wild Billy's Circus Story."

Finally, art! petite_madame swooped in and hammered out such gorgeous achy lonely pretty art, I'm still trying and failing to describe it properly. Just look at it! Be warned, it is very spoilery—beautiful and spoilery.

Here's all of her collected art!

And here's a link to the fic!

Title: The Gentleness of Home
Author: aceofhearts61 @ AO3 / [livejournal.com profile] cagedwriter61 @ LJ
Tags: bed sharing, hugs/cuddling, spooning, chronic pain
Characters: Dean, Sam
Genre/pairing: None. Primary nonsexual/nonromantic relationship between Sam and Dean. Curtain!fic, future!fic, fluff
Rating: PG-13
Word-count:
Spoilers: None
Warnings: None
Summary: Sam looks after Dean on a rainy day. Future!fic. Hunter retirement. Curtain!fic. Cuddling. Belly rubs. Comfort. Bed sharing.
Reccer: anonymous
Reccer’s comments: The idea of Winchester cuddles, with the “sound and smell of rain coming through the window” is such a peaceful, nice one. This one will put a smile on your face.

Title: It Leaves a Stain On All Your Clothes (And No Detergent Gets It Out)
Author: [livejournal.com profile] purple_carpets
Tags: abandonment issues, body image issues, bottom!Dean, bruises/bruising, child abuse, childhood trauma, clothes sharing, crying!Dean, daddy issues, emotional pain/hurt, exhaustion, fainting/collapse, fever, headache/migraine, heatstroke, insecurities (misc./other/uncategorized), manhandling, mutism/voice loss, nightmares/night terrors, pretty!Dean, psychological issues, ptsd, secrets (somebody finds out), self-esteem issues, sexual assault/abuse (non-con), stress, sunburn
Characters: Dean, Sam, OMC
Genre/pairing: Gen, with past non-con, casefic
Rating: R
Word-count: 21,000
Spoilers: up through season 2
Warnings: past sexual abuse, language, buckets worth of angst
Summary: Back in 1992 the Winchesters spent a summer with an old hunter in Louisiana. Dean never told anyone about what happened during those nights, when John was out and Sammy was asleep. Now, they need to go back there on a hunt and Sam should really stop asking questions and throwing worried glances Dean's way. Dean's is fine. Not like he was traumatized or anything.
Reccer: anonymous
Reccer’s comments: This is one of my favorite Big Bangs of 2011. It’s an emotionally tense, gripping case-fic that has Sam finding out a big secret about his brother.

Title: Starving in the Belly of the Whale
Rating: PG-13
Pairings/Characters: Sam, Dean, Bobby, minor John, Jess, and Cas
Words: ~9,600
Spoilers: Through the end of season four.
Warnings: Lots and lots and lots of talk of suicide, language, brief references to physical child abuse, very, very brief references to something approaching sexual abuse, some pretty severe familial dysfunction, brief discussions of torture, lots of none-too-healthy mental states.
Summary: Dean goes under. Written for this prompt.
Neurotic author's notes: Oh lordy it's four am. Okay, well, I loved this prompt. I really did. And this story...mostly fits it? I mean, yes, it does, but it's also just a sort of broad look at the Winchesters and the state of their union circa the end of season four (and kind of beyond), and how they got to be there. Blargh. It's long and strange and sort of stream of consciousness-y.
One more: Title and cut text are both from Tom Waits's "Starving in the Belly of the Whale."

don't go dreaming, don't go scheming, a man must trust his mettle in the crooked old world...
[identity profile] sparrow-lately.livejournal.com
I...am not 100% sure this goes here, because it's mostly hurt and not much in the way of comfort, so...if it doesn't go here, it can come down. But here it is. *is nervously babbling*

Title: Variations on a Theme (or five ways it might have been)
Rating: A hard PG-13, if such a thing exists
Pairings: Sam/Jess (sometimes), mostly gen
Words: ~8,000
Spoilers: For pretty much all aired episodes
Warnings: Descriptions of violence and physical/emotional child abuse, discussion of suicide, lots of language, mental illness, major character death, gratuitous hurt!Dean and a little bit of hurt!Sam, hardcore Biblical geerkery in part four. John does not come off well in this story, which was not my intention (though I'm no great fan of John so I'm not too fussed)
Summary: Maybe the Winchesters fight monsters and prevent the apolcalypse, and maybe they don't. Five places the Winchester boys might have ended up.
Neurotic author's notes: This happened because I was sitting in my religion class thinking about parallel universes. And also about how fun/weird it would be to contemplate the addition of new books to the canonical Bible, because I am a huge nerd. Therefore, this happened. Also, the cut text is from Richard Feynman's The Character of Physical Law, because I am an incurable dork.

every theoretical physicist who is any good knows six or seven different theoretical representations for exactly the same physics.

Title: Crashing in the Same Car
Author: [livejournal.com profile] purple_carpets
Characters: Sam, Dean and Dean again
Rating: PG-13
Wordcount: 5100
Spoilers: Teeny-tiny mention of S7
Warning: Uhm...nothing beyond your run of the mill Winchester-ness
Disclaimer: Not my boys. Kripke broke them long before I ever got to them.
Summary: Post S7 Curtain!fic. Dean isn't exatcly the biggest Dean fan out there. Having this kid following him around as a constant reminder of all the things that are wrong with him isn't helping either.

Thing is, Sam’s never really thought about it at all. How watching his little, four-year-old life burn to the ground like that screws up a kid way worse than John Winchester ever could.

Aka, two comment-fics...

The Tree of Dreams (And Death And Doom)
Summary: Yet another fill for this prompt: The sun is shining, the birds are singing, and wee Dean gets stuck in a treeeee. There are tears.
About as much angst as you'd expect from five-year-old Dean (aka, quite a bit). It's still got comfort in there, though. Why yes, I was just starting in on this when I spontaneously stopped giggling and started taking the prompt seriously..
Wordcount: 1,227
Spoilers/warnings: pants-wetting, if that upsets anyone. Um, spoilers for... the pilot?
Disclaimer: These beautiful people don't belong to me.

The Stars At The End of the Longest Day
Summary: on July 4th, 2010, Dean wakes up in a hospital bed... and Sam is there. But that can't be right... can it? Fill for this. It's the fourth of July, and Dean is in the hospital. Sam smuggles him gently onto the roof to watch the local fireworks display.
Sam is not as gentle as he could have been, for reasons that will make sense if the first part of the summary made sense. But, he also sort of... is? Ambiguity. Angst.
Wordcount: 1,733
Spoilers/warnings: end of season 5. 6x1 to be really safe.
Disclaimer: these beautiful people don't belong to me.
