Like previos episodes, this one has shifting POV's that include Dean's. A reminder: this is a Sam-centric fic, but it definitely dives into Dean's internal struggle as he deals with his own trauma.

Title: Away from These Shores (11/?)
Author:ever_dimming
Genre: Gen
Summary: A simple hunt leaves Sam in an altered state no one seems able to explain – at first. Pulling him out of it is not nearly as easy as it should be, especially since Dean is dealing with his own trauma(s).
Triggers / warnings for this episode: Past suicidal ideation (and then some) in one paragraph; Dissociation (mostly not Dean's, for now); post-trauma, flashbacks, past violence & torture in hell and the Cage; quick reference the Winchesters' painful upbringing.
Spoilers: The fic is standalone, but refers to the plot up to and including 8X01 here and there.
Disclaimer: Supernatural, its characters, plot lines etc. belong to their awesome creators. I am merely suggesting fun new ways in which those beloved characters could suffer and/or be comforted.

He remembers his father’s arm around his shoulder, his eyes dark and worried, his voice doing that thing it did whenever he was feeling too much and decided to feel nothing at all. I know you miss him, but you can’t fall apart on me like that, we’ve got a job to do.

He remembers trying.

*A/N: I deleted my own post last year about this WIP while going through a bad bout of anxiety. So, seeing as I've added a few new chapters since then, I thought I'd re-post. I really hope that's okay (and my apologies if I miss any PM's -- I'm apparently a complete moron, because I cannot for the life of me work the LJ inbox anymore. Not sure why).

***
This started out as a Sam-centric fic, and it still is, so fair warning about that; but my fondness for Dean and his struggles snuck in soon enough. So, this fic has caretaker!Dean who is also increasingly revealing and dealing with his own trauma, and we get his POV as well. I think that might be relevant here. The next chapter I'm working on seems to be relatively Dean-heavy, too.

Summary: A simple hunt leaves Sam in an altered state no one seems able to explain – at first. Pulling him out of it is not nearly as easy as it should be, especially since Dean is dealing with his own trauma(s).
Triggers / warnings: A lot of dissociation (mostly not Dean's, for now); occasional self-harm in later chapters; post-trauma, past violence & torture in hell and the Cage; occasional mentions of the Winchesters' painful upbringing. Some grief, since in this slightly AU Cas did not survive Swan Song, and Bobby & Ellen are around (but Jo is gone).
Spoilers: The fic is standalone, but refers to the plot up to and including 8X01 here and there.

Title: The Man Who Came to Be Dinner

Summary: Fucking vamps. His opinion of spending time with them prior to his arrival here had been somewhere between vacationing with Osama Bin Laden and genital herpes on a scale of experiences he'd enjoy. Now he'd gladly take both together over this.

Dean has been captured by a trio of vamps in Purgatory. His best hope of escape lies with two beings who can’t stand each other, working together to get him out. So, that’s no hope at all then...

Rating: PG-13

Warnings: Bad language

Title: Stuck in Reverse
Summary: Dean thinks he’s doing better. Sam’s not so sure...
Rating: PG-13
Genre/pairing: Gen
Spoilers: Up to the end of Season 7.
Warnings: Bad language, show-level violence, mental health issues.
Word count: 8,019
Author’s Note: Sequel to 'You've Done All the Things That Could Kill You Somehow'. Obviously it would make sense to read that first, but in a nutshell, Dean is back from Purgatory thanks to a ritual Sam found, but there are two problems: he's damaged both mentally and physically and he's reappeared on the other side of the world. Now released from the hospital, the boys are settling into life in the English countryside to continue Dean's recovery...

Thanks as always to [livejournal.com profile] thruterryseyes for the beta. Any remaining mistakes are mine. :)

Title: Rest in Peace

Author: [livejournal.com profile] sw0rdy

Rating: PG-13

Warnings: Bad language, mentions of violence, substance abuse.

Genre/pairing: Gen

Spoilers: For season 8.

Word count: 1,104

Author's note: Unbetaed so all mistakes are mine. Written for the February Challenge at [livejournal.com profile] hc_bingo. Prompts: Insomnia, Exhaustion, Substance Abuse, Wildcard - PTSD. Thank you and sorry to the wonderful folk who left me prompts when I was struggling to think up a story. It doesn't mean to say I won't write your suggestions in the future. :) I hope you can still enjoy this little fic.

Summary: It’s been two days since he reconnected with Dean via a Borax shower and a holy water facial and in that time Sam has come to acknowledge two things: number one, that despite the upheaval to his new life, he is utterly ecstatic to have Dean back and two, he’d be lying if he said he wasn’t scared shitless by his big brother.

Sam needs to sleep, but he also needs to keep an eye on Dean.

Title: An Attribute of the Strong (3/3)
Rating: PG-13 for language
Characters: Dean, Sam, mentions of Benny. Gen.
Word Count: This part: 5655. Overall: 13681
Warnings: Some spoilers for end of season 8.
Summary: Written for the prompt at hoodie-time: Whatever Dean was eating in Purgatory, it wasn't what you'd call well-balanced meals. And adjusting back to 'real' food is harder than he expected. Dean's thin, borderline underweight (despite Sam's bitching at him to eat something), and his immune system really isn't up to dealing with flu season...

Because I have some kind of bizarre attachment to this 'verse, and I'm sorry. But here are all three parts.

Title: Our Troubles Will Be Miles Away
Author: [livejournal.com profile] sw0rdy
Rating: PG-13
Genre:Gen, canon AU. H/C (traumatised, PTSD!Dean).
Characters: Dean, Sam, OFCs.
Spoilers:Nothing specific, but set post-season 7 after Dean returns from Purgatory.
Warnings: Bad language.
Word Count: 8,657
Author's Notes: Unbetaed, because I do everything at the last minute and I really wanted this posted before Christmas Day (with three hours to spare!). This story is a gift to my friends list, particularly [livejournal.com profile] thruterryseyes and [livejournal.com profile] siennavie who have made my experiences in fandom this year particularly awesome. It’s also for [livejournal.com profile] justmep2, who has been just lovely and for [livejournal.com profile] becc_j who is still patiently waiting for my Reverse Bang Story and I'm massively excited to be working with. I hope you’ll all enjoy this shamelessly feel-good festive tale. Title taken from ‘Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas’ because, you know, someone with a pretty nice voice covered it recently. ;)

Merry Christmas everyone!

Summary:“Everyone deserves a little kindness, Dean.” Outsider POV. Sam has sprung Dean from Purgatory, but the experience has changed his brother forever. Retired from hunting and in the throes of a breakdown, Dean finds himself miles from home with no recollection of how he came to be there and, more importantly, how to get back. Cue a kind soul and a little Christmas spirit.

Title: You've Done All the Things That Could Kill You Somehow
Author: [livejournal.com profile] sw0rdy
Artists: [livejournal.com profile] thruterryseyes and [livejournal.com profile] siennavie
Rating: PG-13
Warnings: Bad language, extremely traumatised!Dean, caring!Sam.
Word Count: 24,289

Author's Notes: This fic has history, which I feel the need to explain. It started in the season 7 hiatus as a fill on [livejournal.com profile] mad_server's Season 7 Finale Meme for a prompt left by [livejournal.com profile] i_speak_tongue who requested Sam busting Dean loose from Purgatory with a ritual, which initially he thinks hasn't worked until he gets a phone call from the other side of the world. She requested 'terribly banged up Dean' and a reunion scene so I started writing and forgot to stop. I hope I produced something that filled the prompt adequately, even if it's several years too late.

Since the fic seemed to be growing into something of a reasonable length I decided to work on it for the 2012 [livejournal.com profile] spn_gen_bigbang. It got claimed, but suffered an artist malfunction and has languished on my hard drive ever since. When it was re-submitted this year, I was thrilled that not one, but two amazing artists stepped up as pinch hitters. Their art... well, you've just gotta see it. I'm in their debt for the incredible pieces they've done for this fic, as well as being utterly lovely to work with. Please, please, please stop by at their masterposts to view the full-sized art and show them your appreciation.

Thank you also to the wonderful [livejournal.com profile] rince1wind who betaed it what seems like a lifetime ago. After some last-minute alterations, any remaining errors are mine. Title is taken from 'Life Starts Now' by Three Days Grace. Feedback is always massively appreciated and, due to the length of time since I first wrote it, there's now a prequel and two sequels that will appear at some point in the future.

Summary: After eventually finding a ritual that worked, Sam has sprung Dean from Purgatory, but there are a couple of problems: one, Dean's re-appeared in an alleyway in London and two, he's so broken physically and mentally that he's been classed as a 'vulnerable adult' and has been placed under the guardianship of Social Services. When Sam arrives at the hospital he quickly realises that broken bones are the least of his worries...

Title: Riding Out the Storm
Author: [livejournal.com profile] sw0rdy
Rating: PG-13
Genre/characters:Gen. H/C (hurt!Dean), Dean, Sam.
SpoilersNothing specific. Set after Dean returns from Purgatory.
Warnings: Bad language.
Word Count: 3,546
Author's Notes: Thank you to the fabulous [livejournal.com profile] reapertownusa for the beta. Any remaining errors are mine.

Summary:“I still think Dad would be proud of us for everything we've done, even though we’re not hunting anymore. I sure think it's cost us enough."

Sam’s stunned. All he’s ever wanted is for his brother to recognise that he’s entitled to a life beyond the one their dad mapped out for them, and here he is, talking like he might actually believe it's true.

Retired from hunting, following a nervous breakdown after his return from Purgatory, Dean is persuaded to take up horse riding by his therapist. When Sam agrees to come with him, he’s not expecting to enjoy it and he’s certainly not expecting the heart to heart that goes with it.

Written as a sequel to Nothing Else Like It, which was in turn written a couple of years ago for a comment meme at [livejournal.com profile] hoodie_time. The prompt was basically Dean and horses, a combination that told me to go write something straight away. Comments and feedback are always gratefully received.

The return of Throwback Thursday Flashback Friday! I have no idea what the difference between a throwback and a flashback even is, in meme parlance, but here at [livejournal.com profile] hoodie_time they are synonymous.

If, uh, "flashback" counts as flashing back to like, three days ago. This post contains spoilers for 9x21 "King of the Damned"--but not beyond that.

This post is dedicated to what I've here dubbed "magichands Sammy," AKA moments where Sam calls Dean back from elsewhere, with varying degrees of success and increasing physical (and/or demonstratively emotional?) distance.

4x06 - Dean hallucinates Lilith and demon!Sam )

8x02 - an interrogation triggers a Purgatory flashback )

9x16 - first use of the First Blade + bonus )

9x21 - 2 clips, descriptions contain spoilers )

I'm hesitant to offer any commentary or comparative thoughts, because there are so many ways to link or unlink these scenes I want you all to be free to make your own associations (or dissociations, as the case may be!). But I'd love, love, love to hear your thoughts, questions, hopes, fears, etc. <3

If you're going to talk about 9x21 or any confirmed spoilers for 9x22/9x23, please remember to place your commentary under a spoiler cut! You can C&P the code here:

Can you think of any other moments you'd like to add? Or non-"magichands" scenes that are interesting to think about in conjunction with these? I'm sort of thinking about 6x01, with soulless!Sam and the djinn, but I don't actually remember how that happened. I think Dean may have just passed out. XP

Warnings: Language and the usual amount of gore
Word count: 40k
Spoilers: Set in season 8 (somewhere between ‘Remember the titans’ and ‘Taxi driver’) so if you’ve seen it, you’re good
Rating: R

Summary: How far can run from yourself? Purgatory changed Dean in more ways than he’s aware of, in more ways than he is willing to admit even to himself. Working on a new case that takes them deep into the midst of a series of gruesome murders and an invisible killer, Dean struggles to come to terms with who he is while Sam does his best to figure out his brother’s secrets.

Story Notes: This story is set in the same universe as Primal: Sense of self, but all the important information is here as well, so you don’t need to read that one at all.
