[personal profile] kalliel posting in [community profile] hoodie_time
The return of Throwback Thursday Flashback Friday! I have no idea what the difference between a throwback and a flashback even is, in meme parlance, but here at [livejournal.com profile] hoodie_time they are synonymous.

If, uh, "flashback" counts as flashing back to like, three days ago. This post contains spoilers for 9x21 "King of the Damned"--but not beyond that.

This post is dedicated to what I've here dubbed "magichands Sammy," AKA moments where Sam calls Dean back from elsewhere, with varying degrees of success and increasing physical (and/or demonstratively emotional?) distance.

4x06 "Yellow Fever"

[Can't see the embed? Catch it on YouTube!]

Dean hallucinates Lilith and demon!Sam. Manhandling ensues.

8x02 "What's Up, Tiger Mommy?

[Can't see the embed? Catch it on YouTube!]

An interrogation triggers a Purgatory flashback. Sam tries to get Dean to stand down by…slapping the table.

9x16 "Blade Runners"

[Can't see the embed? Catch it on YouTube!]

After killing Magnus, Dean remains entranced/distant. And as a random note, Sam also has to call Dean's name a few times to get him to pay attention after Abaddon's demons key the Impala. FWIW. XD

I love the blade's pulsing "running fingers around a water glass" sound. If someone knows the more academic term for that, please do share!

9x21 "King of the Damned"

It occurred to me after I cut the video that it probably would have made more sense to preface this short clip with a bit of context, so here is some context, sort of:

"Who says I don't want to [torture]?" - source

Dean terrifies Ezra, the Dumbest Angel in the Garrison. Sam jumps in.

Dean kills Abaddon, and then some. His facial expression at the end, augh.

I'm hesitant to offer any commentary or comparative thoughts, because there are so many ways to link or unlink these scenes I want you all to be free to make your own associations (or dissociations, as the case may be!). But I'd love, love, love to hear your thoughts, questions, hopes, fears, etc. <3

If you're going to talk about 9x21 or any confirmed spoilers for 9x22/9x23, please remember to place your commentary under a spoiler cut! You can C&P the code here:

Can you think of any other moments you'd like to add? Or non-"magichands" scenes that are interesting to think about in conjunction with these? I'm sort of thinking about 6x01, with soulless!Sam and the djinn, but I don't actually remember how that happened. I think Dean may have just passed out. XP

4.06 - Oh God, that's the scene, the scene with the thing Sam does that makes me crazy. At about :57 in this clip, he's walking toward Dean and he dips his head and I think it's something only Evil!Sam does, like he's getting down to your level while still showing how huge and intimidating he is, and it's so malevolent and so freaking hot.

Sorry, you were saying?

Anyway. I don't know if this is related to what you're talking about, but I saw either on LJ or Tumblr (sorry, can't remember) something about Dean in the scene here with Ezra, and as Sam calls him back you can watch his face as he transitions from "about to gleefully slice you up" to "angry! who is stopping me from slicing you up!" to "yeah, Sam, what do you want?" and it's just really interesting to watch. Especially if you ask yourself, did he really segue from "angry" to "what?" or was that display just for Sam?

As for other examples, it's hard to think of more situations where Dean was Not Himself. It just doesn't happen to him the way it happens to Sam.

It required a lot of research. A LOT.

Ahhh, I've missed these throwback/flashback posts. And this one was suuuuch a great choice. I really like seeing all the season 9 ones back to back because you can see Sam getting progressively more afraid with each clip. And like you said, Dean's face at the end of that last one. Augh!

You know, i think my personal headcanon in the 'Blade Runners' scenes is that the blade, made to kill all evil, kind of 'resonates' to it, and beyond feeling whatever feel-good-powerful-i-am-a-god stuff Dean's feeling there, he's *also* feeling Crowley's evil and it makes him just want to hack and slash until he can't feel it anymore.

I don't have anything else to add, unfortunately - my crappy memory always makes stuff like this impossible for me. But i love these clips and the observations. :)

The way Sam resonated with the word? Cool!
