Reccer's Notes: This is the first posted work for our case!works month, and it's setting the bar crazy high, guys. XD (But in a way that INSPIRES, yes??) The detail to this piece is breathtaking, from the aquatic-themed wallpaper in the motel, to the chipping blue lacquer on the table, to the casts of the light. As you scroll down the piece tells a story rich with ambiguities and--pun unintended--depth. The light fades from the top of the piece to the full dark of the bottom to dazzling effect.

Now Sam has to decide between killing his brother and risking that Dean will turn him next.
Reccer's Notes: This is one of the amazing sets of artwork that came out of spn_reverseband this year! This is one of those pieces that's both the most adorable thing in the world, yet undeniably creepy. And the scene illustrations she does in addition to the original piece are absolutely priceless. The fic that goes with it is Between Scylla and Charibdis by cherie_morte, which you should also check out, though I've not yet read it. The fic is NC-17 Sam/Dean.

And then it'll rip your heart out when you're least expecting it with a single thought, a line, a loose Winchester train of thought. And it hurts so good.

(Unofficially, because it is never too late to fill a prompt. ;D) In an effort not to simply rec basically the entire masterlist, I figured I'd start by reccing the entire masterlist. The gorgeous specificity of language, pristine dialogue, and understated--yet extremely evocative--tone of this piece really emphasizes each brief encounter between Dean, Sam, and Jess during Sam's time at Stanford. Each scene feels painfully delicate (in the best of ways), and yet, is undergirded by unmistakable love, security, a sense of 'home' you don't often expect, or find, in SPN.

How to Get Over a Broken Neck (and other advice for hunters with homicidal family members) by i_speak_tongue

Immaculately situated in S1 canon (plot-wise as well as emotionally), i_speak_tongue's fic excavates fresh ground alongside 1x10 "Asylum," which is particularly impressive given the massive corpus of excellent and variegated fanworks that have sprung from these same roots over the last nine years (!). A combination of deft character interactions and exquisite internal dialogue, this fic balances vulnerability, fear, and steady un-histrionic humanity in a way that makes me fall in love with Dean all over again.

There's a horizon to the speaker in this fic that stretches beyond the moment of her encounter with Dean, without diluting the intensity of the immediate narrative. And more than that, there's a horizon to the world into which that narrative intervenes. This is a fic with an ER that can't necessarily promise 24/7 supervision of one patient amongst many. Sure, it's a small detail, but it speaks to more than its face value; and this fic turns expertly on minutiae--from the taste of coffee to what the speaker does and does not see in Dean, to a dim smile of Sam's, which "must have been lovely once."
