The 411 on Rec Searches:

For fun, a mod will occasionally put together one of these rec searches. (You can still make your own rec post at any time, fyi.) Rec search info and a rec search masterlist can be found HERE, and you can leave any suggestions for types of rec searches you would like to see there.

These recs were compiled from our last rec search. The theme of the rec search was vids (ft. angsty!Dean, obvs.)

If you have any other similarly themed recs, (or self-recs), please leave them in the comments to this post so that others can check them out.

Hurt by [livejournal.com profile] ash48
Vidder’s notes/summary: Dean's hurting in more ways than one. This video looks Dean and his pain through Season 4. Set to "Hurt" by Johnny Cash. Character study, angst. Gen.

Reccer’s notes: This vid hurts. my. soul. I absolutely love this Johnny Cash cover, and it fits so well with the show and Dean. It's quiet and heartbreaking.

Jesus Christ by [livejournal.com profile] astartexx
Vidder’s notes/summary: ‘Jesus Christ, I’m not scared to die, but I’m a little bit scared of what comes after.’ Dean made a deal with the wrong side, but it’s not like the other did him any good. Set to “Jesus Christ” by Brand New. Dean POV. Gen.

Reccer’s notes: This is the first SPN vid I remember ever watching, and it remains a fave, despite the fact that I’m not a huge fan of the song used. The way the lyrics mesh with the video is stunningly perfect. It's a great character study, technically amazing, and very touching, besides. Even though it was made a few years ago, watching it now makes me think of present events on the show, which I think is another sign of it’s awesomeness!

Soldiering by [livejournal.com profile] astartexx
Vidder’s notes/summary: 'Took you in so far, inhaled till I could not exhale.' Dean always knew his Dad would die for him – he just hoped he didn't have to make that decision. Set to “Soldiering” by David Usher. Dean POV, gen.

Reccer’s notes: [livejournal.com profile] astartexx is seriously amazing. I’d recommend all of her(?) stuff, but this one is a concise, (the vid is quite short) BEAUTIFUL look at Dean and John’s relationship and it holds a special place in my heart.

I promised. by [livejournal.com profile] lilhellsangel and [livejournal.com profile] blackbetrayal
Vidder’s notes/summary: "You got to promise not to try to bring me back.“ Set to “The Caliing” by Brand New X Music . Spoilers up to the 5x22. Dean, Lisa, Castiel, some Sam. Dean/Lisa-ish.

Reccer’s notes: This is a such a cool and well-realized AU. There's lots of lovely season five related angst, Dean/Lisa, and Dean missing his Sammeh.

Tags: ep: "Swan Song," substance abuse (alcohol)

Furious Angels (intro) by [livejournal.com profile] meivocis @ [livejournal.com profile] infectedframe
Vidder’s notes/summary: '...and if you go, furious angels will bring you back to me.' Set to “Furious Angels” (intro) by Rob Dougan. Gen.

Reccer’s notes: This vid is under a minute, but packs an amazing punch. This is emotional, gruesome (if you’re a wimp like me, and have never re-watched Dean’s death-scene before) and just sort of wrenching in general. In the best possible way, of course!

Tags: Dean's deal, death + a bro hug, wooo.

My boy builds coffins by [livejournal.com profile] mithborien
Vidder’s notes/summary: 'My boy builds coffins for better or worse. Some say it's a blessing, some say it's a curse'. Set to "My boy builds coffins" by Florence + the Machine. Spoilers to 5x10, Dean. Gen.

Reccer’s notes: This is another fantastic character study in vid form, with lots of whump as a bonus! It’s seamlessly edited and I think it’s a beautiful song choice for Dean too. A+.

Tags: It's hard to choose which tags to use for some of these. How about I just tag this one with an A, for awesome?

The Devil’s Paintbrush Road by [livejournal.com profile] rusalkablue
Vidder’s notes/summary: Dean comes to grips with the fateful deal and the life that lead him to make it, but is there a way out? Clips from season two finale All Hell Breaks Loose Pt 1 & 2 and a few episodes previous to those. Set to “The Devil's Paintbrush Road” by the Wailin' Jennys. Drama with a slight AU twist ending. Gen.

Reccer’s notes: This is an older vid, but one I’ve come back to many times. The song is so perfect for season-two era!Dean, to my mind. The link above is to the vid on youtube, but you can comment to at at the vidder’s LJ here. I didn't use that link to start with because the youtube vid from there is down.

Rabbit, My Claws Are Down by [livejournal.com profile] secretlytodream @ [livejournal.com profile] graphicinmotion
Vidder’s notes/summary: 'It's cold out there so why not stay here under my tail.' Slowly but surely Sam was becoming the Antichrist and Dean lived with that horror right next to him on the shotgun of the Impala. Set to “I Know I'm A Wolf” by Young Heretics. Spoilers up to 5x22. Gen (with AU twist in the end.)

Reccer’s notes: I think this can be classified as Dean-focused, though Sam is definitely in there a lot. No question about the hurt; not so much comfort I'm afraid. It's called Rabbit, My Claws Are Down, by Loki/SecretlyToDream. She has many beautiful SPN pieces, I've only watched a few so far, but I keep coming back to this one - it's especially haunting. The vid is great and the song itself is chilling regardless, so the effect when combined is... unsettling, but in a good way. The narrative is in the author's description. Basically Dean dealing with Sam going darkside. Just beautiful, sad and lovely. It's been stuck in my mind for a good long while now.

Come on, Angel by [livejournal.com profile] wistful_fever
Vidder’s notes/summary: 'Once he's yours, he's yours for good. Now you behave like an Angel should.' A study of the struggle between the Winchester brothers. Set to “Come on, Angel” by Sarah Sean. Spoilers for all of season one. Sam, Dean, John with a focus on Dean, gen.

Reccer’s notes: This is a very touching vid. I love that it intersperses clips between the brothers as children and as adults, and how it does it in such a meaningful way.
