HEAR YE, HEAR YE. It's Throwback Thursday again! And it's time to hearken back to 4x06 "Yellow Fever." Thank you to
boysinperil for suggesting this episode!
While I was clipping this, it occurred to me that this is sort of reversal of 3x11 "Mystery Spot," because in 3x11, Sam was like OH GOD OH GOD YOU'RE DYING DEAN and Dean was like, derp derp; in 4x06 Dean is like OH GOD OH GOD I'M DYING (AGAIN) and Sam's just like, lol derpy derp derp. Sam don't have time for this bullshit. XP I'll just leave that here for you to interpret as you will.
It occurs to me that in addition to the essentially pornographic pleasures of regaling H/C moments, these may actually serve as useful ficcing and arting references. If you're interested in enhancing your grasp of H/C-related Dean body language, this is an excellent collection of clips! Featuring:
* expressions of fear
* hallucinations
* heart palpitations/cardiac arrest
* coughing
* choking
* anxiety/panic attack
* paranoia, as demonstrated via facial expressions
* lying exhausted on the ground
* looks of consternation as Dean contemplates Sam's demonic future
* Dean's lying face as he opts not to share his concerns wrt Sam's demonic future
* and as a bonus, Sam's FINE I guess I'm enabling your utterly transparent lies today face
Explications for the following clips may be truncated because my god, I am going to starve to death; it's one of those days where you really wish you owned a microwave because ovens are just so. Slow. And I am so. Hungry.
CLIP #1: With time ticking down, the pages swim before Dean's eyes, reminding him: You're dying; this isn't the first time. You know what happens next. This scene features one of my favorite recurring characters on SPN, the lovely Star Clock. (Also featured are coughing!Dean, sweaty!Dean, anxious!Dean, hallucinating!Dean, and any other slowly!dying!Deans you're likely to conceive of.)
The following clip is dedicated to
marieincolour, who shares my interest in Dean coughing up wood chips. :3 You will also enjoy this clip if you like concerned!Sam, asking-after-Dean's-welfare!Sam, panicked!Sam, or other various caretaking Sams.
I don't know if it's my frame of mind right now or what, but omg tthis episode is completely ridiculous. And amazing. But ridiculous. Completely melting the hearts of H/C trope lovers is Sam, starring as the YED, and Dean, who reveals in this scene his deep-seated fear that something will go wrong with Sam--that something's up, that he's going to go dark side, that Dean won't know until it's too late. It must be rough having your greatest fears consistently realized (to some degree of accuracy) every six to twelve months. On the upside, it could be worse. And er, by that I mean "it will be worse next year. And then the year after that, and the year after that…"
Also, if you're lucky, you may also get to watch an advertisement about the word of God, and what He has in store for you. I think it matches pretty well with this clip. XD
I'd like to break with levity for a moment however, and note that I find the various facets of Dean's terror here truly heart-breaking. He feels damaged; he feels like he's a burden to Sam, a pain in his ass. He's afraid Sam doesn't need him, or want him around. He's afraid of Sam's demon blood; he's afraid of whatever Sam's keeping back. He's afraid of what he's done in Hell; he's afraid of the person who did those things in Hell. (He is that person. He is damaged.) He's afraid, as he's been since the day John died, that if something happens to Sam, he'll have to kill him. He's afraid that maybe, just maybe, now he can. Evil!Sam tells Dean he's headed back to Hell, which is a terror in itself--but you don't need to go to Hell to remember who you were in Hell. To become him.
BABY LILITH ASSAULTS DEAN [director's cut]. Dean's hallucinations surge to a dramatic climax as his fears for Sam dovetail with his memories of Hell. JA does a great job with this scene, but the little girl who plays Lilith seriously knocks it out of the park. Like, this is a real scene in a real show, guys. I don't even--!
Finally, Sam and Dean have come to the end of a successful hunt, we've been trained well enough to know that this doesn't mean it's over: We've left some horrors unspoken.
:(
Throwback Thursdays will be on hiatus next week, but if you have a specific episode you'd like to throw back to, let me know!
Also, as a head's up… If you have any weekend plans, please cancel them. :D
:D?

Date: 2013-10-04 06:52 am (UTC)I love that beautiful imagery of Dean with that Bible, just a gorgeous, gorgeous shot...
And the end, when Dean still hallucinates Sammy's eyes flashing yellow... I've always interpreted that to be a reference to Dean's post-hell PTSD... as in, a subtle hint that maybe, just maybe, he'd be having some of these hallucinations/fear reactions even without the sickness. The sickness is GONE at that point, and he still sees those yellow eyes...
This episode is my favorite kind on SPN (like Mystery Spot) an episode that makes you laugh hysterically, then turns it on its head and makes you BAWL LIKE A HELPLESS CHILD

Date: 2013-10-04 12:41 pm (UTC)And ooooh I like your interpretation a lot. It reminds me of the scene where Dean's looking at the creepy masks in the Halloween episode. Because
a subtle hint that maybe, just maybe, he'd be having some of these hallucinations/fear reactions even without the sickness
YESSSSSSSSSS you are my favorite person. *____*
Hee, mine too. SPN at its very evil-est and very, very best. LOLing and then sobbing is my favorite past time! :P Ah, SPN fandom; masochistic act upon masochistic act.

Date: 2013-10-05 06:03 pm (UTC)Seriously though, it's pure gold. Sure, it's not handling the topic perfectly, but the glimpses we get into Dean's post-hell-psyche. YES GOOD GIMMMMMMEEEEEE.

Date: 2013-10-04 09:04 pm (UTC)Dean's swings between child-like reactions and abject terror (where no cause was apparent) made it hard for Sam and Bobby to take his symptoms seriously. I just loved how he hid behind the chair, slapped the gun out of the Sheriff's hand and was shocked by what he had done, wonderful stuff!
A hurt fest', this episode! Whetts my appetite for more hurt!Dean, here's hoping the next season is chock full of h/c goodness!
