it's a small crime: november guest rec post

Hola! I'm vie_dangerouse, and I am the guest reccer for this month. Below I have eleven (a random number, I know, but a good one nonetheless! It is a prime number, even!) fic and fanvideo recs. This list has been compiled from a number of fics that have really stuck with me, whether by tugging on my heart, tickling my funnybone, or just being amazing. <3

Title: Lady’s Bedstraw

Reccer's Notes: It’s one thing to be a diamond in the rough, but another to be a diamond amongst gems. This fic was written for spn_summergen earlier this year, and I think somehow it got missed out on having lots of reviews, amongst all of the other fics. I sincerely believe that this is a travesty, as this was by far my favorite fic all summer. Dean is sick, yes, which is always fabulous, but it’s really the unique story structure that shines. The whole story is told through text and instant-message conversations between Sam and Dean, and it is hilarious, sweet, and spot-on.

Title: Is That Alright? (Fanvid)

Reccer's Notes: Set to the acoustic “9 Crimes” by Damien Rice, this video incorporates beautiful editing and scene selection from Season 1, as well as pre-SPN work from J2. What I love most about this video is the crux scene—the emotional high point of the song, set to the classic first encounter between Sam and Dean from “Pilot.” It’s not a scene that I would have ever construed as Wincestous before this video, but ever since, it’s been lodged in my brain. (In a good way.)

Title: Little Man

Reccer's Notes: Pre-series fics always hit my heart, and this one doesn’t disappoint. What I love most about it is that there’s never overt sadness; just John, and Dean, and baby Sam, together. This is a fic about the small, transient moments on a journey to somewhere, trailed by that masked man Grief. (Plus, wee, sick!Dean is ridiculously adorable here.)

Title: The Kill (Fanvid)

Reccer's Notes: I know that this video has been recced here before, but I can’t make a rec post without adding this. I can’t even describe how this video makes me feel—think of it as a tail-end of Season 5 angst (the angst is very season/episode specific, we all know that!)- fest, tied with a beautiful, blood-colored ribbon.

Title: In the Forest

Reccer's Notes: Otherwise known as ‘the fic that made me fall in love with SPN.’ This was one of the very first SPN fics I ever read (confession: I had heard tell of SPN, and that the lead boys were cute. So, I did what any h/c-inclined girl would do… I googled SPN sick!fic. And read oodles of it. Of the oodles, this was the fic that stuck. <3 Beyond my lovesick ramblings on this fic, it involves a unique Sam first-person POV and some hilarious note-writing from a laryngitic Dean.

Title: Ten and Taken (Chapter 3)

Reccer's Notes: A unique twist on the de-aging trope. The fic entire is lovely, too, but I always return to this chapter, due to the mini, sick!Dean, and the hilarity of mini!Dean in and of himself. The basic gist of this story is that Dean gets de-aged mid-S4, and Bobby and Sam try frantically to cure him, although they both end up bonding with the fun-size version. Oh, and Dean adopts a death omen giant rat as a pet. “Fugly.” Too precious for this world, seriously.

Reccer's Notes: Again, a fic that has lived legendarily in my mind ever since I read it. I think it’s the supreme conjunction of all of my favorite things: sick!Dean; angst; demon deals; casefics; fevers, A+ snark; and kalliel. <

Reccer's Notes: Hands-down, best ending line of any fic I’ve read, ever. The end.

Title: Primary Care

Reccer's Notes: Another fic that has been recced before, but upon re-reading, I simply cannot leave it out. This fic is whip-smart, hilarious, and owns my heart. At those times when I like to pretend like S6 never happened, I go and live in this fic, because it has the best post-Apocalyptic storyline that I have ever read. The boys work together, post-Hell, post-S5 finale, but in that certain skewed Winchester way that works for them. And I love that.

Reccer's Notes: Letters to Stephen King written by drunk!Sam, annotated by Dean. Best. Thing. EVER. I pull out this link at least once a month just to look at these again.

Title: The Wasteland

Reccer's Notes: For all of you out there who don't know, I LOVE Ruby, especially S3, Katie!Ruby. This fic is a Ruby-centric AU S5. (With the real Ruby, ;) ) Five-part, epic fic (not as in, skater, “that was epic, dude!” but as in length-wise/scope), wherein Crowley and Ruby are BFFs (he calls her “Ruby Tuesday”!) and Sam has said “yes” to Lucifer. Follows the format/theme of Eliot’s classic poem, “The Wasteland,” including the most delicious twist ending. As a bonus, mad_teagirl makes some of the best fanmixes I have seen in fandom, and this story includes one that has since become the soundtrack to my life.
