Author's notes/summary: Dean's most reliable relationship has always been with his own self-loathing. Warnings: Dark!fic featuring several potential triggers; more details at the link. 13,225 words. NC-17. Alastair/Dean/Bela, Dean/Alastair, Dean/Castiel, Dean/nightmare!Dean, Dean/Lisa, Dean/OFCs (one prostitute, one demon); references to Dean/Cassie, Dean/Amanda Heckerling, Sam/Jess, and Sam/Ruby; briefly implied John/Bobby.

Reccer's notes: maypoles says: Do read the warnings! This is a darker fic, and a darker Dean than I'm usually drawn to, but I ended up completely enthralled by it. The writing has a wonderful cadence to it. I also really appreciate how amor_remanet brings a subject like Dean having an eating disorder into the fic in a way that feels organic and true to the character. I haven't seen that very many times. Oh, and there IS a hopeful note at the end if you don't think you can handle all the darkness. A little one! But it's beautiful. (It involves Dean/Cas, fyi.)

Author's notes/summary: He brushes his teeth in front of the bathroom mirror. His eyes look huge and scared in a sunken face, cut by its first lines, pale skin scattered with old, fading freckles. A guy you wouldn’t sit next to on a Greyhound bus, the kind who stares out the window all the way to Baton Rouge, wiping his nose on his sleeve and weeping. Hunt a swamp monster. It’ll be a blast. He looks at himself in the mirror. What an asshole. 5x22 coda. 4,386 words. NC-17, Sam/Dean.

Reccer's notes: maypoles says: This is a totally glorious post-s5 Sam and Dean reunion fic. The language used lends it a beautiful, kind of dreamy atmosphere, and the Sam/Dean is just ♥.

Author's notes/summary: Dean's subconscious is showing. (After a creature attack that leaves Dean feverish and hallucinating, his subconscious makes a connection between he and Sam that his conscious mind can't seem to shake once he's well. His newfound realization keeps coming out in the strangest of ways--really strange.) 5000 words. First-time Wincest, humor, mildly-cracky, brief (dream-induced) tentacle porn. Um. The tentacle porn is Wincest-y? Sort of? It's also funny? I'm sorry? NC-17, Sam/Dean.

Reccer's notes: An anon says: This is hysterical! And very hot. It's got a really fun, playful mood going on if you're looking for something to counteract all the aaaaangst. And I guess I totally just read tentacle porn and loved it? Yes, yes I did.

Castiel has seen a lot through his human eyes during his time at Camp Chitaqua, and Dean is doing his best. How it all began. Dean whump, sick!Dean, and hopefully some plot. Reccer's notes: maypoles says: This is one of the best fics based on “The End,” that I’ve read, in no small part due to a fantastic imagining of human!Castiel as he tries to keep Dean afloat. It’s by penless from ff.net (postfallen on LJ) who is new to LJ and just started posting her previous fic Going Through The Motions to LJ/this comm yesterday. Going Through the Motions - a gen fic ft. pneumonia!Dean in the fallout to "My Bloody Valentine" – has been recced here as well in the past, and something I’m impressed by is how DIFFERENT from each other, but equally good these two fics are.

Reccer's notes: maypoles says: It’s possible I’m biased... this was written for one of my prompts at our latest comment-fic meme, and the prompt/fic is the EXACT SPN fic I’ve been wanting to read for like, three years. However, it’s also MORE than possible that this is also just really incredible! Dean’s breakdown is a low-key one as far as breakdowns go. There’s nothing overly dramatic here, just nuanced character interactions, and a healthy dose of h/c featuring an absolutely beautiful caring!Sam. I could not possibly love this more than I do.

This is the prompt, btw:

This is going to sound pretty dire, but it’s the comfort I’m after, really! I’d like something set anywhere from s4 to a future-fic where Dean kind of falls apart on all fronts. He’s stressed out, an undiagnosed PTSD/clinical depression-case, a borderline alcoholic, and he’s run down, so then he keeps getting sick - lol, omg - and Sam has to take the reins and take care of him, (and himself) stop hunting for awhile and just work on being brothers.

Reccer's notes: marlowe78 says: Pre-series Dean and Sam encounter their first Wendigo, and they weren't supposed to. sodakey writes two POVs, Sam's and Dean's, and even though I'm very much a Dean-person, I just love the depth of Sam's fear, his terror and his determination to find and save his brother. This reads very true - Sam is the right age to do what he does, Dean is hurt pretty convincingly, (poor boy...) and John, when he appears, is himself with the right touch of gruffness and love, written just so that we never veer into too much schmoop. Long story short, this is a great little fic.

I tend to skim fic headers fairly quickly, skip stories that don't seem like "my kind of thing"--which is normal, of course, but for the fact that I don't really have any idea what "my kind of thing" is lolwtf. THAT BEING SAID, I've always found your reccer's notes (and the specific h/c tags, ahaha 8D) exceptionally helpful.
