Throwback Thursday time! :D I've chosen a single scene from 7x05 "Shut Up, Dr. Phil," not because it's the only Dean H/C scene (there's a lot of drinking and interpersonal drama in this episode, and also.. bees?) but because it's one of my favorites, and the first Winchester scene in 9x03 this past Tuesday made me recall it fondly.

The emotional repercussions of killing Amy/betraying Sam make themselves increasingly known, and contrast with Sam's buoyant response to… I'm actually not sure. Shit going down and managing to survive it, period. XP

I reference S9 in one sentence under the cut, though the reference is so general that if you know that SPN does, in fact, have an S9, you won't be spoiled.

I love the way the camera scans from the window and through the room, so you get a sense of what time it is (it's pretty bright--not THAT early), the degree to which Dean actually cared to prepare for bed (he didn't), and the tell-tale empty beer bottle on the nightstand (only one, though!). And then, Sam's curious absence.

Other sidenote, both Dean and Sam do the double pillow thing. D'aww.

Highlight: Dean's fretful REM twitching. But just in case viewers have someone forgotten Castiel's "demise" and Amy's actual demise--AKA major plot points that happened like three episodes ago, haha--we return to those, too.

And who needs beer at 10AM when you can have whiskey? And then case stuff case stuff, blah blah, Sam being glorious, Dean looking like shit (my favorite!). And he actually really does look like shit, red-rimmed and pale in a way we haven't really seen since 2x22 "All Hell Breaks Loose, Part 2," especially in contrast to runner's!high!Sam. I just really love this exchange:

SAM: What's going on with you?

DEAN (low register, deadpan): We have had this conversation, Sam.

SAM (pointedly): No, we haven't. See, to do that, you'd actually have to   s p e a k.

DEAN: Okay, see, let me get this straight. See (clears throat), you're--New Sam, right, Lance Armstrong--

SAM: --biking--

DEAN: And uh, and I'm still me, mkay? So, so you might see some things different now--call it a runner's high or some crap--but that doesn't mean that something's going on with me.

Which, obviously Dean is a lying liar who lies, but it also spreads Dean across several competing (but equally real) realities--one in which his behavior can be explained by Cas/Hallucifer/Amy, but also one in which it can't. While his aim is to deflect Sam away from the former by asserting that Sam simply sees Dean differently because Sam's taken an unusually 'up' tack of late, at the same time he (unintentionally) leaves open the idea that normal for them is actually just shitty. In ways that a truce over Amy (see: 7x07 "The Mentalists"), the cleansing of Hallucifer (see: 7x17 "The Born-Again Identity"), and Castiel's return (see: 7x17 for naked-and-covered-in-bees-Castiel, S8 for normative!Castiel) do not help.

Given the back-reference to jogging!Sam in 9x03 and the loosely similar dramatic frame S9 is taking with respect to Sam and Dean's interpersonal dynamic, I thought it timely to bring this sucker back. ;)

Aaaaand mostly I just like this scene a lot, let's be honest.

Got an episode or scene you'd like to throw back to? Let me know! Right now I'm kind of thinking of selecting a few "forgotten Dean H/C moments" out of some S4 episodes, like the near-hanging in 4x12 "Criss Angel is a Douchebag," the concussed!Dean scene in 4x15 "Death Takes a Holiday," and hmm I've always been fond of unconsciously-lying-on-a-coffee-table Dean in 4x04 "Metamorphosis."

If there's anything you'd like to see in these Throwbacks--more commentary, less commentary, Throwback-related fic/art recs, more clips, longer/shorter clips, whatever--just let me know! Always happy to oblige. :)
