For fun, a mod will occasionally put together one of these rec searches. (You can still make your own rec post at any time, fyi.) Rec search info and a rec search masterlist can be found HERE, and you can leave any suggestions for types of rec searches you would like to see there.

Prostitution/rent-boy fics are a very popular trope in this fandom, especially where Dean’s concerned - and many of them happen to be angsty/h/c-y - so I figured it was time to make a rec post out of them here. And I need YOU to help me do that.

Below are several of my favorite rentboy!Dean fics, most with a healthy side of wincest. I wasn't sure which tags were available, so I just kind of used the ones on my delicious. I also included the summaries because fics without summeries are a serious personal pet peeve for me.

Title: The Glamorous Life
Author/artist: rivkat

Summary: Dean's infected by an incubus. Complications ensue.
I've read this fic a dozen times and it never gets old. Rivkat's work is always awesome and she definitely delivers in this fic. Possessive, desperate!Sam is always a favorite, and Bobby's a brilliant supporting character. But really, the thing that makes this fic is Dean. He's so painfully in-character in circumstances that are simultaneously tragic and almost ridiculous (because who else but Dean could find himself in such a mess?) that his actions are perfectly logical when the situation is viewed through Dean-goggles . . . Even though you spend the a good chunk of the fic hoping that Sam strangles him as soon as he saves him. All in all, a fandom classic.

Title: In Shadow

Summary: SPN AU. Sometime in 1988 John Winchester is arrested after he takes out a pack of werewolves (and is naturally considered a 'serial killer' by the local authorities). The boys are put in separate foster homes and grow up in very different lifestyles. The point at which this story begins, the boys have already been separated for five years. Their struggles living apart, and their fateful reunion will be the however many hours' traffic of our stage.
First things first, this is a WIP and updates are slow to come (most likely due to the long chapter lengths). And the fic is so engrossing that it deserves a warning for being in progress since reaching the end of a chapter normally makes you want to shake your computer in the hopes that it will make another chapter magically appear. But this fic is well worth the angst of waiting for the next post. Young, protective!Sam is magnificent and Dean's very real trauma is beautifully orchestrated, even if the author occasionally lays the hits on him a bit thickly. My favorite part of this story, though, is probably the floundering inadequacies of Dean's apple-pie foster parents as they try to sort out what to do with the damaged hell-raiser they've had a hand in breaking. Even if it never gets finished, In Shadows is more than worth the time to read (repeatedly . . . like a stalker hunting for a new chapter...) because this is one of those stories that sticks with you long after you've closed the browser.

Title: Beautiful Things

Summary: You really shouldn't trust two dangerous-looking men trying to pick you up in an alleyway. They're probably up to no good. But then, so are you.
This is an awesome and deeply satisfying casefic. While second person POV isn't usually my cuppa, I doubt this could have been done any other way. I can't say much more without spoiling the ending but, despite its brevity (or maybe because of it), this fic is both an oldie and a goody.

I love In Shadow. Just a FYI though, the story on ff.net is updated all the way to Chapter 29 while I think the one on LJ is only updated to Chapter 26. Just if anyone didn't know and was looking for a couple more chapters.

Title: In My Brother's Keeping

The kid's younger than Dean's normal clientele. Hell, he looks younger than Dean. Narrow cat-eyes watch Dean with a hungry intensity that kind of skeeves Dean out but he wouldn't be the first, he won't be the last, and Dean's still got a couple knives tucked away. He can handle himself. So he gives a shrug. "Anything you want, if you pay enough."
This is probably one of the most well known rentboy!Dean fics in fandom, but I never get tired of reading it. Like all of poisontaster's work, the story speaks for itself: at its heart, one day Dean lost Sam and then one day Sam found Dean. And no one else could have told the tale with the biting clarity and the understated, but unflinchingly darkness illustrated here. A must-read for any fan of Sam or Dean and wincest.

Summary: Something evil is killing treeplanters in the forests of the Pacific Northwest, possibly the same predator that Dean narrowly escaped years before. How Grimm will things get before the brothers figure it out?
This is dubiously a rentboy!Dean fic, but Dean's growing desperation leading up to his decision to hook is a central element to the fic, so I decided to include it. Besides, no one will break your heart quite like BigPink. Though this is part of a larger series, it stands alone without effort effort and is well worth the read. Long, plotty, and with fully fleshed out characters, Red is a good example of Pink's elegant and intricate--but always satisfying--plots, beautifully juxtaposing Sam and Dean's bleak childhood and battered adolescence with the men and hunters they will both become. My favorite elements are the three phases of Dean portrayed: each carefully realized throughout the story as a damaged and flawed, but ultimately unflinchingly heroic individual. Curl up with a cup of tea and prepare to lose an afternoon to this fic. You won't regret it.

Summary: With Dad missing, Dean does what he has to.
The beginning of this story is like one long written flinch on Dean's behalf. And it's not that the writing is poor--on the contrary, the style and pacing are superb. Rather, you can feel the boys' desperation as the days begin to stretch out with no sign of John. Sam's fear and confusion and Dean's anger and desperation are the opening notes to a deeply satisfying orchestra that follows the Winchester brothers from their adolescence through the Stanford years and right up to the inevitable return of their long lost father. Dean's inability to deal with his past in a healthy way has realistic and well thought-out repercussions throughout the entire story without being overblown or dramatic and Sam's deft handling of his brother is equally pleasing. This is my favorite flavor of the Winchester boys: Sam&Dean against the world, no matter what--or who--may come their way.

The writing is lacking a certain polish, but isn't terrible by any stretch, and I enjoyed the story so much I didn't mind.

Reccer's comments: Although I read this a while ago, I remember that it was a refreshing take on a set of very familiar tropes. Dean hustles (pre-series) to take care of Sam; Castiel appears as the strange but noble knight-in-shining-trench-coat.

My original comments: I like especially the non-exploitative quality of the interactions here, and the believability of the setting. They work well together to craft a tiny little world that spins on its own. Lovely and poetic. ....The characterization sells it. [This is] a nice, poetic fic that breathes new life into some old tropes.

Reccer's comments: The section in Sam's Politics Of Gender and Sexuality class had said that prostitution was damaging, scarring, universally harmful, a blight. To Sam's critical eye, Dean doesn't seem particularly scarred. This was the very first rentboy-Dean fic I bookmarked, way back in April 2006. It's perfectly short, with spot-on season 1-style dialogue.

Reccer's comments: The compass is a small, smooth silver thing. It has a pleasing weight in John's palm. Dean and Sam give John a conspicuously expensive present. Things go downhill from there. The Christmas setting gives this fic a particular sense of poignancy. It helps that fleshflutter has a knack for constructing simple, hard-hitting images: decorations on a potted palm, flickering fairylights like ambulance lights, etc etc.
