Original character and/or outsider POV recs

The 411 on Rec Searches:

For fun, a mod will occasionally put together one of these rec searches. (You can still make your own rec post at any time, fyi.) Rec search info and a rec search masterlist can be found HERE, and you can leave any suggestions for types of rec searches you would like to see there.

These recs were compiled from our last rec search. The theme of the rec search was original characters and/or outsider POVs.

If you have any other similarly themed recs, (or self-recs), please leave them in the comments to this post so that others can check them out.

Title: Palo Alto
Author: [livejournal.com profile] annonwrite
Tags: fever, flu
Characters: Sam, Dean, Mr. & Mrs. Moore
Genre/pairing: Gen, h/c, fluff
Rating: PG
Word-count: 3,236
Spoilers: Season 1
Warnings: None
Summary: The boys stop in Palo Alto for some healing for both of them.
Reccer’s comments: The OCs in this fic are the characters of Mr. And Mrs. Moore, who we never got a chance to meet onscreen. I liked how the author brought them alive. A good look at s1!Sam’s headspace, plus everyone taking care of sick!Dean, awww.

Title: Defining Normal
Author: Baroqy
Tags: counseling/therapy, hell/post-hell issues, injury, mental illness, PTSD, psychological trauma, physical assault/abuse
Characters: Dean, Sam, Bobby, OCs
Genre/pairing: Gen. Angst and whumping and humor. So it's a mixed bag.
Rating: PG-13
Word-count: 55,250
Spoilers: Takes place near the end of season 4.
Warnings: PTSD
Summary: Bobby's plan to give Sam and Dean a simple, probably-not-a-possession job turns ugly.
Reccer’s comments: This was a basic, fun casefile that all the sudden turned into a very cool, psychologically interesting story. The main OC is an old friend of Bobby’s, who just so happens to be a psychologist, and I promise that she’s not a Mary-Sue. I liked the way she fit into the Winchester’s world, and I thought the presentation of PTSD was well-done.

Title: Strangers in Gilead
Author: [livejournal.com profile] corvus_imbrifer
Tags: amnesia/memory loss
Characters: Dean, Sam, OCs
Genre/pairing: Gen with some het (Dean/OFC & Sam/OFC), AU, period piece
Rating: N/A
Word-count: 40,000+
Spoilers: N/A
Warnings: N/A
Summary: The rider arched his back in a deep stretch and rolled his head in lazy circles. Been on the trail for a while. Youngish, she judged, a creature of shimmering heat and dust. Second stranger come to Gilead this week.
Reccer’s comments: There are strangers in Gilead. A tall, well-kept man named Ben Cartwright, very probably a Pinkerton-Man, though he never confirmed it, and a green-eyed, sweet-talking, scruffy traveller named William Carlyle. What they want, how they came here - why they came? Nobody know, least of all Miss Rose and her girls from the saloon.

This is the PERFECT western-story for Dean and Sam. Intriguing, mysterious, action-packed and full of evil and strangeness, not forgetting a loveable, believable heroine and lovely OCs. This is more than worth the read! (Also, I have it tagged as hurtDean, but I can't remember what happens. So there could be a gunshot-wound or something...)

Title: Crazy Train
Author: [livejournal.com profile] etrix @ [livejournal.com profile] etrix_lists
Tags: depression, exhaustion, hell/post hell issues, nightmares, psychological damage, psychological issues
Characters: Dean, Sam, Bobby, Castiel, OC
Genre/pairing: Dean/OFC
Rating: NC-17
Word-count: 43,000
Spoilers: Spoilers for up to 5.14, My Bloody Valentine.
Warnings: Angst, drama, bdsm (incl knife-play), humour, language, m/f, OC, descriptions of torture, violence. Relationships forged in hell, physical and emotional conditioning, much-darker-than-on-the-show!Dean. Dean as a torturer, and the OC as a masochist.
Summary: They’d tried running; always moving, chasing one hunt after another, but it didn’t help so they decided to stand still for a while. Even standing still doesn’t help them run from their past.
Reccer’s comments: Reading the warnings to this fic, I wasn’t sure this would be my thing, but I really loved it. I’ve read A LOT of post-hell Dean! fics and this one is original and different and uncomfortable in the awesomest of ways. But yes, please do read the warnings.

Title: The Accompanist
Author: [livejournal.com profile] gretazreta
Tags: grief, injury, psychological issues
Characters: Dean, OCs, Sam, John
Genre/pairing: pre-series, Dean/OMC
Rating: R
Word-count: 40,000
Spoilers: None
Warnings: AU. Adult concepts.
Summary: Dean learned to play the piano at his mother’s knee. Now, fifteen years after her death, his talent for music is a secret he keeps from everybody, especially his father. Stuck in a small town for the rest of the school year, looking after a brother who’s growing apart from him and training for a future of hunting that he’s not sure that he wants, Dean finds an unlikely confidant in an elderly Jewish man who’s haunted by his own secrets. It’s a year of firsts, hunting alone and falling in love, but when a monster from the tragic past starts wreaking havoc on the people of the town, Dean must come to terms with his own fears and desires in order to save the people he cares about the most.
Reccer’s comments: This is a casefile, a coming of age story, a romance (usually not at all my thing) an AU, and all of these things are brilliantly rendered. What a great fic. Wonderfully bittersweet, this one will stick with you.

Title: A Hole In The World
Author: [livejournal.com profile] honeylocusttree
Tags: hell/post-hell issues, hospitalization (psychiatric), mental illness, PTSD
Characters: Dean, OFC
Genre/pairing: Gen
Rating: PG
Word-count: 4000+
Spoilers: Season 4
Warnings: Tense shifts, weirdness.
Summary: S4 AU of post-Hell Dean, traumatized to the point of non-functionality.
Reccer’s comments: [livejournal.com profile] honeylocusttree is a fairly new writer in this fandom, and I’m so glad we have her. Her writing is dark and inventive and crisp. This particular fic features a great OC - her POV is so cool, very surreal. A thought-provoking piece.

Title: hope won't hide the loss
Author: [livejournal.com profile] katriel1987
Tags: injury
Characters: Dean, various OCs, a bit of John and Sam
Genre/pairing: Gen, preseries, hurt/comfort
Rating: Strong PG-13
Word-count: 8500
Spoilers: None
Warnings: whump and naughty language
Summary: It was official: Cam didn't just dislike Dean Tyler. She hated him.
Reccer’s comments: The OC *and* outsider POV in this ghost story fic is quite interesting in and of herself, but then there's smokin' hot teen Dean (the Sheepdog) and fabulous writing to keep me glued to my screen.

Title: Dean's Bob
Author: K Hanna Korossy
Tags: amnesia/memory loss
Characters: Dean, OC, a teeny bit of Sam
Genre/pairing: Gen, friendship, h/c
Rating: PG-13
Word-count: 4,377
Spoilers: None
Warnings: None
Summary: If he didn't have a Sam, I guess a Bob was the next best thing. Outsider POV.
Reccer’s comments: I like that the reader doesn't know at first who of the Winchester is hurt and that we get a great Outsider POV of both brothers and some wonderful protective!Sam.

Title: Not a regular
Author: K Hanna Korossy
Tags: exhaustion, stress
Characters: Dean, Sam, OC
Genre/pairing: Gen, h/c, friendship
Rating: PG-13
Word-count: 2,905
Spoilers: None
Warnings: None
Summary: At first glance, he looked like a thousand others who'd stopped in the diner over the years. Outsider POV.
Reccer’s comments: I'm not sure that this one fits the criteria of this rec post, but maybe it does because in my book: If you whump Sam you automatically whump Dean too. A wonderful little fic in which we see Dean on coffee/food runs while caring for an injured Sam through the POV of a waitress.

Title: Rest Your Weary Head
Author: K Hanna Korossy
Tags: concussion/head trauma, gunshot wound
Characters: Dean, Sam, OC
Genre/pairing: gen, h/c, friendship
Rating: PG-13
Word-count: 7,018
Spoilers: None
Warnings: None
Summary: He'd thought older brothers were supposed to be the protective ones. Outsider POV.
Reccer’s comments: Wonderful Outsider POV from a Doctor who shot Dean and now has to deal with a very protective (and also hurt) Sam. Just so you know, there is some great Dean whump but the focus is a bit on Sam.

Title: But I Heard You Coming, From Way Across Town
Author: [livejournal.com profile] onelittlesleep @ [livejournal.com profile] littlesleepfic
Tags: fever, flu
Characters: Dean, OFC, Sam
Genre/pairing: Dean/OFC, future-fic
Rating: NC-17
Word-count: N/A
Spoilers: None
Warnings: None
Summary: onelittlesleep and I think that Dean should have this ultra-dorky thing going on with, like, a kindergarten teacher, where he'd be all "...cardigans!" and she'd be all "IS THIS GUY RETARDED?!? What is WRONG with him?" and-- oh, it's hard to explain, I don't even KNOW." - this series, as explained by meyerlemon in a previous section.
Reccer’s comments: This was recced here at the comm foreverrr ago, but the link I had it saved under died and I just recently found it again under [livejournal.com profile] onelittlesleep’s new fic journal, so I thought I’d re-rec it. [livejournal.com profile] onelittlesleep has a nifty, captivating writing style you shouldn’t miss. A crazy-awesome blend of h/c and ridiculous levels of hotness.

Title: You Say Pumpkin, We Say Pie
Author: [livejournal.com profile] postfallen
Tags: cough, fever, respiratory illness
Characters: Sam, Dean, OC
Genre/pairing: pre-series gen
Rating: R for language
Word-count: N/A
Spoilers: None
Warnings: None
Summary: God, Fiona needs to quit her job.
Reccer’s comments: Generally, I dislike OCs. They remind me of Mischa Barton. But the OC in this fic, Fiona, has such a voice and personality that permeates every aspect of this fic that I kind of fell in love. I read this fic for the first time a long time ago at the autumn meme, but it's stayed with me since then. I don't even know what else to say about it- it's just fantastic.

Title: Small Potatoes
Author: [livejournal.com profile] roque_clasique
Tags: respiratory illness
Characters: Dean, Sam, OCs
Genre/pairing: Gen
Rating: G (rated by reccer)
Word-count: 1170
Spoilers: None
Warnings: None
Summary: For the prompt: Dean has a gnarly upper respiratory infection and both boys are cold and hungry and broke and tired of sitting in their car watching the snow fall. So they go have a turkey dinner at a homeless shelter. Outsider pov, maybe?
Reccer’s comments: In which Sam and Dean are broke and go to a homeless shelter for turkey dinner. And Dean is sick. The premise sounds like it could end up being incredibly sad or floofy (Is that a word? Well, it is now.), but this is neither. A fun little fic, with an equally fun OC.

Title: Stubborn
Author: [livejournal.com profile] sams1ra
Tags: learning disability
Characters: Dean, OC, mentions of Sam
Genre/pairing: pre-series gen
Rating: PG
Word-count: 3600
Spoilers: None
Warnings: None
Summary: He just wanted to quit, said it would make everyone's life a lot simpler.
Reccer’s comments: I love how Dean's teacher doesn't give up on him. She sees right through his crap and manages to get through to him despite Dean's best efforts to not graduate

Title: The Kissing Curve
Author: [livejournal.com profile] wave_obscura
Tags: broken bone/fracture, cough, delirium, fainting/collapse, fever, flu, pain, pneumonia, respiratory illness, sneezing
Characters: Dean, Sam, OCs
Genre/pairing: This fic is 100% gen. That said, there is a quick and TOTALLY meaningless and unromantic Dean/OC kiss.
Rating: PG
Word-count: 10,000
Spoilers: None
Warnings: H/C, sick!dean, sick!sam, hurt!sam, OCs, language
Summary: A couple of locals stumble upon Sam and Dean, who are flu-ravaged, delirious and trying to hunt a ghost. Fever, cough, sneezing, and nonsensical banter ensue. Also, Sam on crutches.
Reccer’s comments: What fabulous OCs! The POV was really engaging, and totally hilarious in places, and delirious!Winchesters were in turn adorable/heartbreaking in their protectiveness of each other, and scary, which is just how it should be.

BONUS #1: The reccer wasn't sure if this next fic belonged in the OC/outsider POV rec list, but said that it does involve a bit of outsiders (of the Supernatural fandom) POV. I really have no idea either, knowing nothing about DC, (I'm told the fic is inspired by it, rather than a true crossover?) but it's a GREAT rec, so I thought I'd put it here:

Title: Land's End
Author: [livejournal.com profile] janissa11
Tags: daddy issues, motion sickness, nausea/vomiting
Characters: Dean, John, OCs
Genre/pairing: pre-series gen
Rating: N/A
Word-count: N/A
Spoilers: None.
Warnings: None.
Summary: “You want money, oughta come work with me.” Larry swigs from his bottle of beer and gives Dean a what-the-hell look. “Lots of it up north. You done me a big-ass favor here, anyway, kid, I owe you. Put in the good word for you.”
Reccer’s comments: Dean is very green in this fic as well as being his normal swaggering, heroic self. I have not watched "Deadliest Catch," so this is a fic that can be enjoyed with no knowledge of the show it is crossed with. The rough environment of this fic is part of its success. It was easy for me to pluck Dean from hunting the supernatural to hauling the natural (crabs), and the crab fisherman seemed similarly rough around the edges like hunters. If you didn't get enough of crab fisher!Dean [livejournal.com profile] janissa11 has two sequels: Man's Allotted Span [complete] and That Fine Simplicity [WIP.]

BONUS #2: I'd like to add a shout-out to two fics that have been recced here before. Both are WIPs that haven't been updated in a very long time, but they're well-worth the read. I say that as someone who tends to shy away from WIPs. They're The Sharpness of the Outline by [livejournal.com profile] kimonkey7 (gen) and The Lee by [livejournal.com profile] pdragon76 (gen, some Sam/OFC.)

I missed this call for recs, but there's a story I ADORE that's perfect for the theme. Sight Unseen by [livejournal.com profile] pheebs1. It's part of her series of stories involving Petra, a blind woman Dean and Sam knew when they were younger and then run into later on. There's some good h/c through the series, but Sight Unseen especially has lovely sick!Dean.

It's funny, but I actually see this as a story about depression, Dean's, Sam's and even Vera's, and how it doesn't change has what they have to do. They still have to get up in the mornings and put one foot in front of the other.

I'm sorry you found the warnings to be inadequate but I thought they caught the basics of the story I was trying to convey. Crazy Train is in no way a serious examination of those effects (its own special sub-set of PTSD) but I wanted to explore how it could have effected them.

It is not Stockholm Syndrome, but rather, physical and emotional conditioning, which is definitely one of the things that can occur to people who experience prolonged torture. They don't think it's okay to have come out the way they did, but they have no one to talk to about it which means no way to really heal from it.

I listed the warnings the author did, and I don't usually add to those unless they're very vague so as not to step on any toes, but I've just added a few inspired by your comment, as well as a reminder to read the warnings. I'm really sorry it bothered you. ;(

I saw it both the way you did and not the way you did, in the sense that it raised uncomfortable feelings in me, but I don't think it's treated as ok by the author.

Thank you for the rec. I'm not sure Crazy Train is a comfortable story, but hopefully it is interesting.

I don't tend to be attracted to them, myself, but I may be changing my mind on the subject. ;) I'm excited to check out the ones I haven't read here; they look like just my thing.

I know it's probably not the right place to ask, but is there a chance you have the story "Missing" by hansons_angel?

Date: 2011-05-16 08:05 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] maypoles.livejournal.com
Her account on ff.net (http://www.fanfiction.net/u/1518817/Hansons_Angel) is still active (although her fic-list isn't complete.) I'd suggest asking her about it there. ;)

I don't remember this rec search. *blinks*
I've just read Defining Normal (I have a bit of a weakness for shrink!fic) and man, that ending paragraph. *snifs*
So, these recs don't necessarily have to be h/c?

I love those kinds of fics as well. There needs to be more of them. Mooooooooore.

And no, the recs should contain at least some amount of h/c. ;)

Howdy! I could have sworn I’ve been to this site before but after going through many of the posts I realized it’s new to me. Regardless, I’m certainly delighted I discovered it and I’ll be book-marking it and checking back regularly.
