I have a place in my heart for fics involving fun, drunk!stoned!boys. But, these are REALLY not that. Angst city, guys! Complete with functional alcoholism in most cases. Fyi.

Reccer’s comments: Out of all of these recs, this one focuses the least on Dean’s drinking, but the way it describes his relationship to alcohol, and how it began, is just perfect. Beyond that, this is an amazingly written, layered look at Dean’s life throughout canon. Oh, and PS, you should totally read the (equally awesome) prequel too: Little Life Raft (you were mine as well). It stands alone, I think, but you shouldn’t miss it.

Reccer’s comments: Hurty but in a nice, subdued way. How the characters react and interact here, in the case of Dean and Sam in particular, says a lot about where they're coming from, how they grew up.

Reccer’s comments: A snapshot into the boy’s pre-series lives, with a brilliant Sam POV and a Dean that will hurt your heart. The basic storyline is deceptively simple, but there's so much going on here. I loveloveloved it.

Reccer’s comments: The author deals with the subject matter very nicely. This is sad and believable, and just well-done. Castiel is especially excellent.

I'm a little surprised there aren't more fics out there dealing with this. Then again, it is a very difficult subject to tackle.
