A Dean-focused
h/c fic challenge

TELL ALL YOUR FRIENDS!

How about a fic challenge? I've never put one of these babies on before, so I took a peek at the way a few other communities do them, and this is what I came up with. I want to put on a challenge that's relaxed and fun, but still structured, and this is all of those things, I think. So, let's get this show on the road!

Schedule:

Submit prompts October 22nd through to November 3rd.
Claim prompts November 5th through to November 20th.
Posting period Anytime after you've claimed a prompt through to February 14th. (Valentine's Day!)
NEW DEADLINE: March 14th.

Note: I'll post a masterlist of the fics that have come out of this challenge as soon as the challenge is over and I get a chance to. The masterlist is now up here.

Additional info/guidelines will be included in subsequent posts for each of the steps of the challenge process listed above, but here are the basics:

01. This is a Dean-focused hurt-comfort fic challenge, so Dean should be the one in the hurt/comforted role. Your prompts/fics may involve sick!Dean, hurt!Dean, angsty!Dean or anything else that results in Dean being on the receiving end of hurt/comfort.

02. Stories should be at least 2,500 words, but there's no maximum word requirement, so you can totally go nuts if you want. Longer stories are encouraged, and very much appreciated.

03. No WIPS, sorry. Stories should be complete and posted to the community all at once (with links to all chapters included.)

04. This isn't a requirement, but I just want to say, betas are awesome! If you're looking for one, our very own beta-reader list has many beta-readers who deal specifically with Dean-focused hurt/comfort fics, or you can post a request for one at [livejournal.com profile] spn_betas.

05. You may want to check out our links of interest for writers as well.

06. When writing your fic, respect the prompted details - genre/pairing, category, (ie: pre-series) etc.

07. The regular posting guidelines we use at this community apply to this challenge. In addition, please put these two things somewhere in your header when posting your challenge fic to the comm:

  • Written for the Dean-focused hurt/comfort fic challenge.

  • Prompt: Whatever your prompt happens to be.

  • Note: If your prompt is very long, you may want to shorten it for posting purposes, or just link to the original prompt.

    08. Also, if you could use this tag when posting your challenge fic to the comm it would be awesome/would really help me when I'm putting the masterlist together: .challenge 1

Note #1: Yes, there's a period in front of challenge 1.
Note #2: Click here if you don't know how to tag your posts.

    09. Please post your fic or a link to your fic to [livejournal.com profile] hoodie_time before you post it to other communities.

    10. If you're not going to be able to get your fic in by the deadline:

Edited to add as of June 2nd, 2010.

Hey, guys! I'll be adding late fics to the masterlist up to and including June 30th, at which point I won't be adding anymore, buuuut we'd totally LOVE to see your fic whenever! ;D Please use our .amnesty tag if you're posting after the 30th.

This isn't a reciprocal fic challenge, so if you don't end up completing your fic for whatever reason don't sweat it, but in that case it would be awesome if you'd let me know/send me your prompt # so I can make the prompt available to others.

If you do that, I will uncross your prompt in the prompt-list and it will revert back to being a leftover prompt. Which just means that it's open for anyone to write if it catches their eye. Leftover prompts aren't part of the fic challenge either and won't be part of the fic challenge masterlist, etc. You can read more about them here.

    Thanks, guys!

    11. If you'd like to promote this, just copy and paste the code above into your journal! ♥

What happens to unclaimed or unfilled prompts?

    Please go HERE.

Oh, and feel free to comment to this post with any questions you may have about the challenge.

Note: This isn’t the prompting post. That can be found HERE.

ETA #1: The fic challenge has a new deadline: March 14th. You can read more about that HERE.

ETA #2: The fic challenge masterlist is now up HERE. Check it out!

I think it should allow a nice, broad range of people to be able to join in and give it a go. And there's already so many fun prompts. I saw one right off the bat yesterday, but then found two more delicious ones today. How to choose? Heh. It should be high entertainment.

Haha, just when I'm getting ready to post for that last fic challenge thingy!

YAY that this is happening! And also, I'm confused about the difference between this and the last one, which, I guess was called a meme maybe? The challenge in September. Just want to make sure I don't do something dumb.

    How did I miss that?

    Thank you!

One more question - can more than one person claim a prompt? And can writers claim more than one prompt? Which really is two questions.

I just want to say, you're absolutely amazing for putting something like this together. It's nice to know I'm not the only one who likes reading about an injured Dean, and those around him caring for him. Dean has been long overdue for some love!

I will definitely be claiming a prompt when they open. There's so many talented people contributing to this community and it's an absolute joy to follow!

Are these gonna be anonymous claims or will they be visible? And if they're visible, will we be allowed to ask the original prompter questions about what they might specifically NOT want in the fic?

Thank you for sorting out the prompt so nicely for us in such a short time! XD *hugs*

And just to share something I read over at the [livejournal.com profile] spnroundtable, some tips before you start any fic, although this is specifically for finishin epic fic but I feel this applies to all the fic in general!

N'aww, it's exam time for me until mid-February, so there's no way I can squeeze writing a 2.5+k fic into that period. Quite saddens me, actually! But I'm excited to see what everyone comes up with :)

    Okay, random question time.

How would you like us to handle stories that have multiple chapters? Is it okay to post them separately? Otherwise it'll make for some ridiculously long posts. Any other suggestions?

Hmm. I don't post fic to my LJ, as it's read by RL people whom I'd rather not have reading my stuff (work people and the like).

I'll see how long the thing gets, and maybe set up a secondary LJ account for posting purposes, if that's okay. :)

(And, uh, yeah. 10 chapters at this rate may not be entirely unrealistic. *cough* Your prompt was... inspiring, let's just say. Dear God.)

    Thanks for the quick response!

I wanted to ask a question regarding the prompts - how strictly do we have to adhere to what the prompt asks us to do? I'd ask the original prompter but they're anonymous. The prompt is about Dean not speaking again after the fire, but it's easier for me to write it if Dean loses the ability to talk later on - when he's older. Is it okay to do that?
