Here are a few recs that involve drowning/near-drowning, or tentacles, or poisoning, or water generally speaking, and occasionally all of the above! And believe me, I have more. I have a problem, I know. I do not care. XD

Title: Sea-themed hurt!Dean

Reccer's Notes: This is the first posted work for our case!works month, and it's setting the bar crazy high, guys. XD (But in a way that INSPIRES, yes??) The detail to this piece is breathtaking, from the aquatic-themed wallpaper in the motel, to the chipping blue lacquer on the table, to the casts of the light. As you scroll down the piece tells a story rich with ambiguities and--pun unintended--depth. The light fades from the top of the piece to the full dark of the bottom to dazzling effect.

Summary: To save a young girl, Dean insists on rushing into a job before they really know what they're hunting. They just barely make it out intact: one small injury, a bite to Dean's neck, and as far as Sam's concerned they got lucky. At least until they find out the bite they'd thought was no big deal is slowly changing Dean into a lake monster. Now Sam has to decide between killing his brother and risking that Dean will turn him next.
Reccer's Notes: This is one of the amazing sets of artwork that came out of spn_reverseband this year! This is one of those pieces that's both the most adorable thing in the world, yet undeniably creepy. And the scene illustrations she does in addition to the original piece are absolutely priceless. The fic that goes with it is Between Scylla and Charibdis by cherie_morte, which you should also check out, though I've not yet read it. The fic is NC-17 Sam/Dean.

Reccer's Notes: No one does short, dialogue-centric, punchy H/C like mad_server does. She writes brotherly love at its absolute highest, and it'll make you happy and comfortable and it'll make you fall in love (with Sam and Dean, with H/C, with fan fic) all over again. And then it'll rip your heart out when you're least expecting it with a single thought, a line, a loose Winchester train of thought. And it hurts so good.

Reccer's Notes: kiltiebum has a sparse style that makes every description of hers just sing. Sam's desperation here, and Dean's increasing disorientation, are sublime. The result is both intensely tied to the immediate moment, but underwritten by everything that's made the Winchesters' lives thus far. The sense of loss, and emptiness, and of things running out is unforgettably sharp.

Reccer's Notes: This is probably one of the lightest, most fun hell/post-hell and dean's deal fics out there. Reading this, it's an absolute blast to read through all of the landmark moments associated with these arcs--Dean's time with Alistair, his being raised from Perdition, re-acclimating to the world topside (or 40 gallons of it, in any case), telepathic brother-bonding… This is exactly what you need on a Sunday evening, I promise you. Or, if you're reading this post and it's not Sunday, ANY EVENING, REALLY. AND ANY TIME OF DAY.

Title: In the Wells of Silence

Reccer's Notes: This is one of my favorite fics set in S8, and it's one that I've consistently come back to since I first came across is (while perusing the drowning/near-drowning tag, of course). I can't possibly do it justice by trying to explain how great this is, except by saying that it is TRULY GREAT and everything, from Dean to Sam to the case to its wild resonances with the rest of S8 canon to the drowning to the everything is pitch perfect, and the effect of all that perfection together is jut sublime. There's great characterization, and there's great thematization, and then there's the sweet spot where there things meet and augment each other--this fic is that spot.
