Hello, dears! Let's pretend it's a lot closer to the beginning of June than it is.
Alright, so it's been juuust under a year since I found this community (and fandom as a whole), and so the loose theme for this batch o' recs is "fics that made me go 'oh, wow, I need to stay here.'" These aren't all of them. These are a tiny fraction of them, to be honest, but here we go. (As I am new, I sincerely hope I'm not posting anything that literally everyone has read; they were new to me within the last year, and hopefully they will be for somebody else reading this, too!)
Title: Winter Sun
Author:
seeing_ghosts
Tags: exhaustion, fainting/collapse, fever, headache/migraine, illness (misc./other/uncategorized), purgatory/post-purgatory issues
Characters: Dean, Castiel
Genre/pairing: Gen
Rating: PG-13
Word-count: +1,300
Spoilers: Only through the season seven finale.
Summary: Dean gets seriously ill while stuck in Purgatory. Castiel can't help; all he can do is wait.
Reccer’s comments: Oh, man, this was literally like the third Supernatural fic I ever read; I'm not even sure I'd gotten to the Purgatory arch yet, but man, I loved it. I still do. Dean and Cas's alternating POVs are perfect, the pacing is perfect, and the muted, bleak ending is perfect. A few things about this got Jossed in season eight, but it's still reasonably plausible and so very good.
Title: Until Morning Light
Author:

Tags: anxiety/panic attack, dean's deal, hell/post-hell issues [sort of]
Characters: Dean, Sam
Genre/pairing: Gen
Rating: PG-13
Word-count: ~2,301
Spoilers: If you've seen the end of season three, you're good to go.
Summary: The countdown is on, The Hellhounds are baying, Dean's feeling the pressure, but Sam's got it all under control...
Reccer’s comments: The suspense of this, and the pervasive, achy sadness, damn near killed me. So much is happening between the brothers in this fic, and a lot of it gets said and plenty doesn't, and it's just so very sad, and really harkens back to the pre-season-four boys, with Sam and Dean's earnestness and honesty and there's a sweetness to them, here, that just really gets me where I live.
Title: Perfect
Author:

Tags: [genre>> other: dark/horror-], emotional pain/hurt
Characters: Dean, Sam
Genre/pairing: Gen
Rating: PG-13
Word-count: ~1,930
Spoilers: None.
Warnings: It's horror fic. It's creepy. Be aware.
Summary: Bad babies get rabies...
Reccer’s comments: Oh, man, okay, my sick side is showing, because this is all hurt and no comfort, but I couldn't resist. This is flat-out, bar none one of the most spectacularly creepy things I have ever read. Like, there's so much potential for freaky shit in both Supernatural and fandom tropes in general that, particularly in the latter case, often go unexplored, but not here. This fic is short and dark and terrible, and I won't spoil the surprise, but suffice to say it takes a fluffy little concept to its very darkest extreme. And be warned: all hurt, no comfort.
Title: For Fierce Confusion, Peace, which is part two of the amazing Death By Water series(or as I like to call it, the armadillo!dean series)
Author:

Tags: bed sharing, blood loss, bruises/bruising, comfort food (pie!/etc.), cuts/lacerations, exhaustion, hunger/starvation, injury (misc./other/uncategorized), malnutrition, mutism/voice loss, purgatory/post-purgatory issues, wound-tending
Characters: Dean, Sam
Genre/pairing: Gen
Rating: PG-13
Word-count: 2909
Spoilers: Only through the season seven finale.
Summary: Sam tries to remember what he even had in mind, all those weeks of fighting and reading and praying. All he knows is that it wasn't this.
Reccer’s comments: Oh man, this whole verse is so gorgeous and subtle and hurty as hell. The first fic is as beautiful as this one, but really almost entirely about Sam, so for Dean we can go to part two. This is basically an AU version of post-purgatory Dean, and a Sam who is trying so hard to do right by his brother without having the faintest idea what that might be. There's so much delicately beautiful imagery to be found here, and this rockin' extended metaphor with water (purity! baptism! renewal! blood is thicker than! etc!) that is absolutely wonderful.
Title: Flashback
Author:

Tags: anxiety/panic attack, delirium, hallucinations/delusions, hell/post-hell issues, psychological damage/broken!dean, ptsd, torture
Characters: Dean, Sam
Genre/pairing: Gen
Rating: PG-13
Word-count: 2475
Spoilers: None really, just generally through season 4.
Warnings: References to torture and some self-harm-y implications (to be safe!). Post-hell nastiness.
Summary: Dean thinks he's got something under his skin. He needs Sam's help to get it out.
Reccer’s comments: More creepy stuff! I really love creepy stuff. This one is also old and if you've all read it before, go read it again, because wow do I love this, from the sheer unapologetic freakiness of Dean's flashback to Sam's helplessness in the face of it.
Title: Like the Shape of a Wave
Author:

Tags: crying!dean, dean wearing sam's hoodie!, dean's deal/making deals with demons, delirium, fever, nausea/vomiting, rheumatic fever, strep throat, substance abuse (alcohol)
Characters: Dean, Sam
Genre/pairing: Gen
Rating: PG-13
Word-count: ~4,700
Spoilers: None really, just to the end of season three.
Summary: AU. Sam and Dean find a loophole in Dean's crossroads deal that frees him from it. Per Sam's wishes, the boys decide to get away from the life. No sooner have they arrived at their (literal) house by the sea than Dean gets knocked flat by something awful – really awful. A series of snapshots spanning the course of a month, detailing Dean's struggle with illness and Sam's struggle to be strong for his brother. Sick-as-a-dog!Dean, Caring!steadfast!emotional!Sammy. (With a side of hungover!Dean).
Reccer’s comments: Last but really, really not least. I love this fic. I love Sam in this, sweet baby Sam who is also not such a baby anymore, and Dean is just put through the goddamn ringer here and it's wonderful and some serious comfort goin' on here and man, just read it and fill up on happy brother feelings (a rare commodity these days, eh?).
